Volunteer Training
Engaging new volunteers and giving them the tools for success is key to IEEE serving our members. Many sections and chapters recently completed new officer elections. Here are some of the resources available for new officers and volunteers to help them succeed.
- Center for Leadership Excellence – This has training modules for many positions in sections and chapters.
- IEEE Collabratec – has a community for membership development and OU Analytics.
- Region 6 Meetings – Presentations from the different area meetings are often available on the area websites.
- Region or Society Officers – Engage in region and society officers with the same position as you. See what resources they can share.
- vTools Meetings – Search past events your section or chapter held or see what activities they’re holding.
For questions, contact the Region 6 Section, Chapter Vitality and Training Chair.
Volunteer Tutorials
The training opportunities that follow are for volunteers of IEEE. They are meant to help volunteers understand how IEEE functions and to explain the many services IEEE has to offer.
IEEE Technical Activities
IEEE Technical Activities provides a variety of training opportunities in the form of workshops, webinars and self-guided tutorials. The training is designed to prepare IEEE volunteers for their various roles within the organization by educating them about the primary functions of IEEE, Technical Activities, and IEEE societies as well as about volunteer services offered by IEEE. IEEE Technical Activities is currently working to create a more effective and engaging user experience. For more information on training opportunities and access to training materials, please visit the new IEEE Technical Activities Operations Site, or contact TA Answer Central with any questions or concerns.
IEEE Center for Leadership Excellence (CLE)
IEEE Center for Leadership Excellence (CLE) is a learning resource aimed at meeting the self-improvement needs of professionals as well as those who are preparing to enter professional practice in the electro-technology fields served by IEEE. CLE training is focused on two broad areas:
- Training for IEEE Volunteers: This training consists of Quick Start training modules for key local IEEE volunteer positions. These modules provide volunteers with practical information concerning their volunteer position so they can carry out their duties and responsibilities associated with their position of leadership. Each Quick Start module emphasizes the most important things that a particular volunteer must do to be effective in the position. In addition to the Quick Start module, a number of references are provided to assist the volunteer in performing his/her duties as an IEEE volunteer. These references, located in the Learning Library on the CLE site, expand the volunteer’s knowledge and understanding in a number of areas.
- Professional Development Training: This training consists of a number of training modules that focus on professional development. Topics cover soft skills such as leadership, communications, and management skills. These training modules are located in the Learning Library area on the CLE site.
Best Practices
Effective volunteering within IEEE is grounded in professionalism, collaboration, and a commitment to advancing the organization’s mission. Best practices include communicating clearly with Section and Chapter leaders, participating reliably in meetings and events, and maintaining transparency in decision‑making and financial processes. Volunteers are encouraged to document activities, follow established IEEE policies and procedures, and work respectfully across diverse teams. Embracing mentorship, sharing knowledge, and supporting succession planning help sustain strong organizational continuity. Above all, volunteers should model integrity, inclusiveness, and accountability—ensuring that IEEE programs deliver value to members and positively impact the broader engineering community.
